FSSAI Registration – The Complete Guide

In India, FSSAI registration or FSSAI license is mandatory for anyone involved in the food business, be it food processing, food manufacturing, packaging, distributing, or selling, if you’re a Food Business Operator (FBO), this license is a must. .

FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India; it is an organization that governs the food business to ensure its quality. The unit is established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, and issues this 14-digit code that is printed on all the food packages. All the process of licensing and registration procedures and requirements are regulated by Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011.

Types of FSSAI Registration 

  • FSSAI Basic Registration : Turnover < Rs.12 lakh p.a must obtain FSSAI basic registration. Form A is required to fill to obtain this basic registration.
  • FSSAI State License : Rs.12 lakh p.a < Turnover < Rs.20 crore p.a must obtain the FSSAI state license. Form B is required to fill to obtain this state license.
  • FSSAI Central License : Rs.20 crore p.a < Turnover must obtain the FSSAI central license. Form - B is required to fill to obtain this central license.


Steps to get FSSAI Certificate Online

  • FBO can obtain FSSAI registration online by filling and submitting the FSSAI registration form as per their business scale.
  • On the FoSCos portal, the applicant must submit all the required documents. Although your registration form can be accepted or rejected by the Department within 7 days from the date of receipt
  • The Department will scrutinize the documents submitted and can conduct an on premise inspection if required.
  • If the FBO meets all the required criteria, then the department will grant an FSSAI registration certificate with the registration number and the photo of the applicant's email ID.
  • The applicant can also download the FSSAI registration certificate by logging into the FoSCoS portal.


Documents Required for FSSAI Registration

TDepending upon the type of registration, you are required to submit different sets of documents that are as follows:

FSSAI Registration

  • Authorized person’s passport-sizes photograph and Aadhar card front and back [self-attested]
  • Address proof of the business premises [rental agreement/previous month’s electricity bill/NOC from landlord]
  • Self Declaration signed by the authorized person

State & Central License

  • Identity proof and passport-sized photograph of the directors/partners/proprietor
  • Address proof of the business premises [rental agreement/previous month’s electricity bill/NOC from landlord]
  • Blueprint and photograph of the premises
  • List of food products and machines (if any) on the company letterhead [with seal and signature]

Manufacturing Units

Additional documents for manufacturing units include:

  • The blueprint of the warehouse, plant, etc
  • A list of all machinery
  • Report of a water test
  • List of all food categories
